Diagnosis and Treatment : E.A. Olsen MacGraw-Hill Inc, New York, 1994 426 pages. ISBN 0-07-047934-8.
Disorders of hair growthThis book offers the dermatologist, the internist or any family physician, the endocrinologist, the pedatrician, the obstetrician-gynecologist and, indeed, any physician who * sees hair loss or overgrowth in regular practice the opportunity to understand the basic pathophysiology, clinical presentation, and effective treatment options for patients with hair growth disorders.
Tools for establishing a working differential diagnosis are discussed after the normal embryology, anatomy, specifics of hair production, and control of normal hair growth are presented. The chapters are organized according to hair growth disorders; rather than exhaustively listing syndromes, liberal use of tables is employed to facilitate recognition of these uncommon or rare syndromes.
Although not a histology textbook, most clinical descriptions of alopecia are accompanied by color photomicrographs of pertinent histology; this is particularly important in the realm of scarring or permanent alopecia.
Clearly, this latter subdivision of alopecia highlights the need for further work on the basic etiology of these and other common hair growth disorders. Current knowledge and future avenues of research are also discussed in this book.
